3BR Investigate how water travels up a stem.
In class and using plants within our surroundings, we’ve been looking at how roots absorb water and how water travels within stems.
We visited Trenance Gardens and looked at some of the trees. They are massive! So we thought we’d see how easy it is to get the water from the roots to the top of a stem, by sucking through a straw. Easy right? Just like drinking a glass of squash? Well we found out, no, it’s not. The longer the straw, the more puff and energy it took to get the water up to the top. In class, the record was 14 straws end to end.
The challenge was won by a Tathra, Trinity and Edie. What a formidable team they made, but they are no match for the trees at Trenance Gardens!
