We have been informed by Cornwall Council Highways department that the zebra crossing at the bottom of Edgcumbe Avenue will for the foreseeable future remain unpatrolled.
In the first instance I am informing all parents and carers of the situation so that you are fully aware and can take this into consideration when planning for your children to travel safely to and from the academy.
Despite expressing our very real concerns with the Highways department regarding the safety of your children, they remain unable to provide a daily crossing patrol. As a result I have, on behalf of the academy and parents, raised our concerns with Newquay Central councillor Geoff Brown who has assured me that he will follow the matter up directly with the Highways department as a matter of urgency.
Over recent days, when we have become aware of the situation, I and other members of staff have attended the crossing during morning and home times because we are very concerned about the safety of our pupils. However, I cannot instruct staff to do this and we are legally restricted to only being present at the crossing rather than provide any form of patrol or crossing duty. I will make every e this is less than ideal and far from the level of safety our children deserve.
I know from speaking with parents recently that many of you are concerned about this situation and so I would strongly encourage you to register these concerns with the academy so that we put forward to Cornwall Council our collective concerns. Please email these to us on webenquiries@newquayjunior.net. Should you also wish to contact the School Crossing Patrol Service their telephone no. is 01872 327895.
Finally, the Schools Crossing Patrol Service have asked that we attach their current notice to you regarding the situation. This is copied overleaf.
I can assure you that Trustees and I are making every effort to try and rectify this situation as the safety of your children is always our first and most important priority.
Best regards
