New State of The Art Facility Opens At Newquay Junior Academy

Newquay Junior Academy saw the official opening of ‘The Edge Centre’, on 23rd March 2016.

Opened by Newquay Education Trust Chair of Directors Mrs Sarah Karkeek with Head Boy Lowen Mears-Ollerenshaw and Head Girl Matilda Rigolli, Pupils, Staff, Directors, members of the PTA and supporters past and present were all on hand to celebrate the official opening.

The brand new building is part of a new £550k investment by the Trust, supported in part by Local Authority Section 106 funding and with a generous donation from the PTA. The Hall officially named The Edge Centre has brought a much-needed space for arts, sports and performances facility to the Academy.

The Edge Centre is equipped with high-performance sport-cushioned flooring and state of the art multimedia facilities where pupils, staff and community groups will be able to explore, develop and showcase their talents and interests.

Situated next to the main school building the new facility has been cleverly placed to retain the sports field and improve parking facilities at the Academy.

Mr Steve Dunn, who project managed the development commented, ‘We’ve been pleasantly surprised how well the new build has fitted in. The contractors have been fantastic and caringly considered the aesthetics of the build blending it into our more traditional site.’

The Edge Centre build has also been able to make significant improvements to the safe access and exit of pupils and visitors to the Academy along Edgcumbe Avenue.

Mr Andrew Reep, Headteacher at Newquay Junior explained during his opening address, ‘We are delighted by the positive responses of parents, pupils and local residents in how the new frontage has helped improve the local aesthetics, whilst also reducing traffic congestion and disruption during the morning and afternoon school runs.’

Members of the Academy Choir were in attendance to entertain guests and mark the official opening celebrations.

Mrs Sarah Karkeek, addressing the guests commented, ‘As part of Newquay Education Trust, we believe in providing pupils and staff with the very best facilities. The Edge Centre is a further commitment by the Trust to its vision and commitment to excellent academic standards and in providing all pupils with outstanding educational opportunities.’

Presenting a commemorative plaque to Head Boy Lowen Mears-Ollerenshaw and Head Girl Matilda Rigolli, Mrs Karkeek added, ‘I am delighted to officially open this wonderful new hall on behalf of all the Staff and Pupils of Newquay Junior Academy.’
