Year 3 have been hugely impressive this week: they threw themselves into the introduction of their topic on plants for next term.
During the week, they worked as a team to plant our new orchard. They planted a variety of heritage fruit trees. They learned how to create a good base from the previously prepared turf and then used a mixture of soil and compost to bed in the saplings. Pupils took the opportunity to investigate the soil for invertebrates, using magnifying glasses and microscopes to help them draw and label sketches, and to help them to determine which taxonomic group they belong to.
In class, they worked on researching the origins of the traditional varieties we are growing, as well as doing taste tests of a range of the different fruits.
Finally, pupils learned about the parts of plants and the function of each part.
A busy but enjoyable week.
