Parent-Teacher Partnership September 2015

YEAR FOUR

Our goal is to work together with Parents/Carers and the local community to develop the enquiring minds of our children, to allow them to reach their own potential. We fulfil this goal by providing a high standard of education in a stimulating learning environment. In Year 4 we cover the CORE subjects (Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Communication Tech), FOUNDATION subjects (Art, DT, History, Geography, RE and PE) as well as providing specialist subject teaching (PE, Art, Modern Foreign Languages and Music) on Thursdays during Academy Afternoon.

We cover a range of topics over the course of the year which include:

History – Victorians and Vikings

Geography – Local and contrasting comparison studies and coastlines.

Science – Electricity, Sound, Animals including Humans, States of Matter and Living Things and their Habitats.

RE – Sikhism and Christianity.

Reading – The children are given the opportunity to borrow books from our library as well as reading books from home or from our class bookshelves. We read regularly with your children through guided and shared reading sessions and the children enjoy independent reading time.

Parental Co- Operation – We appreciate the ongoing support you provide to your child’s education outside of the academy and here are ways you can continue to assist your child to reach their potential.

  1. Keeping an eye on homework (see section below). We expect reading to be done 5 times per week, but one of these can be a parent reading to a child.
  2. Ensuring your child arrives for the start of the academy day at 8.40am.
  3. Encourage visits to Newquay Library.
  4. Voluntary contributions towards educational visits, guest speakers and assistance with large year group projects.
  5. PE kit to be provided consisting of a white T-shirt, black shorts (jogging bottoms for colder months) and appropriate change of shoes. These should be in the academy on Monday morning and left until Friday.
  6. Labelled uniform, PE kit and outdoor clothing.
  7. Providing a drinks bottle so your child can access drinking water regularly and a break-time snack.
  8. Attendance of meetings to check wellbeing and progress. If you have any concerns whatsoever about any aspect of your child’s school life, please don’t hesitate to arrange a time when we can meet or call to discuss concerns.

Homework – During the course of the year the differentiated homework set is as follows:

  • Supervised reading of fiction/non-fiction texts (5x a week). All of these should be signed and dated as a record by parents.
  • Revision of spelling rule and completion of accompanying activity.
  • Homework task set by their Numeracy Teacher
  • Termly homework grids – offering the opportunity to complete both academic and creative collaborative pieces of work.

Attendance – We would also like to stress the need for a telephone call to the academy office on 874543 on the morning of absence. Any unauthorised, unnotified absences are registered.

Educational VisitsThroughout this year the children from Year 4 are taken to local sites for specific studies. These are always teacher supervised, covered by the LEA’s policy of insurance and take place during the academy day. You will be informed separately of visits out of academy hours or away from Newquay which will need your approval.
