Year 5 ICT – Archive

In the first half of the Summer term year 5 have been creating a flappy bat game in Scratch, they have learnt how to animate sprites using change costumes and created a scrolling background of towers that are trying to stop the bat, each
time the bat touches the towers the bat goes back to the start. This also then loses a life. They have learnt about collision sensing and have added variables to their game with scores and lives and have also started to use operators so that when all their
lives are lost then the game stops. Year 5 also watched and completed level 2 booklets on the PLAY, LIKE, SHARE lessons that help them to understand what to share and what not to share online, enjoying watching the SELFIE band and working through their dilemmas.

This term Year 5 have been exploring the world of spreadsheets. They have been able to use autosum, add formulae to cells using the functions + – / *, minimum, maximum, and average. They can identify cells and apply formulae from one cell to other cells.

Year 5 have also been looking at computer control, discussing inputs and outputs and how we come across devices in everyday life that are controlled by computers. They used Flowal software to explore how to control inputs and their outputs. They learnt how to control the lights on a Zebra crossing, how to code and control 2 sets of traffic lights, when controlling the lighthouse they discovered the need for a decision box where the input on or off determined the output. This all worked towards controlling a big wheel at the fair where they had to control the motors on the big wheel to go forward, on 1 input, backwards on another input and a third input would stop the wheel when deployed. Also getting the lights on the wheel to flash in a sequence.

Also year 5 have been emailing and discussed he safety aspects of safe emailing and have created Online safety posters as well as considering copyright rules.

Children have also taken photographs of each other and uploaded them to their folders, have created new folders, have use Photoshop to cut out their faces and have photo shopped them onto copyright free images of mystical creatures. These were then added to a powerpoint presentation where each new mythical creature has been made into a Top Trump card where their creation has been given special Mythical powers and the children have been working on adding animations, background, transitions and sound.
